Measuring Real App ROI? It’s Engagement that Matter$!

We’ve all heard that urban legend about how municipal water departments experience massive system overloads during Super Bowl halftime. While the legends of poor employees scrambling to find shutoff valves are an exaggeration, there’s plenty of truth to the idea that more people are paying attention to something at certain times. This is why a Super Bowl commercial can cost $3 million for 30 seconds, while just about anyone can afford time at 4 a.m. on some random cable channel.

Television has confirmed that a larger audience is worth more. Now, it’s time for mobile apps to embrace that lesson. Say what you want about downloads or total usage, the number one aspect of an app’s usability we must measure is engagement.

This topic was top of mind with a lot of people at the recent MoDevUX, and the parallels between app deployment and mass media ad placement were eye opening.

The most arresting example came courtesy of a media company that — thanks to detailed app management — realized that for a full 30 minutes after they posted a notification to users via their app, that app’s usage increased twenty fold. That’s 20x, not 20%!

Knowing that apps baseline hourly usage, they’ve obviously set rates for in-app advertising. But now, thanks to the ability to really reveal the granular detail of app use, then can charge premium pricing for any promotions placed within that 30-minute window of dramatically increased user engagement.

Better MAM means a clearer picture of user engagement, and that’s a big win for anyone looking to get real ROI out of their app. How detailed is your picture of app user engagement?

Do Your Homework Before You Dis MAM

We’re still smacking our foreheads over the outright dismissal of the highly qualified crop of MAM providers that might be good candidates for purchase by Citrix in today’s brianmadden blog.

Naturally, we’re predisposed to the merits of our own solution, but to claim you had not heard of any of the MAM providers mentioned (present company included) and then give them all the brush off?

We’re confident that Citrix itself is giving this issue a lot more thought than some of the hit-and-run evaluators who somehow found time in their obviously overwhelming schedules to dash off an ill-informed comment.

A Lesson in Lifecycle: The Real Meaning of MAM

The other week, we kicked off what proved to be a good discussion about BYOD. The inception was, we thought, innocent enough — the re-Tweet of an article that prompted our friend Philippe Winthrop at the Enterprise Mobility Forum to author a piece the very next day elaborating (read: ranting) on the differences between BYOD and COIT.

Initially, we were ready to brush off the subtleties as tomato/to-mah-to nitpicking. Now we know how Philippe feels because of what’s happening to one of our favorite acronyms — and one he gets credit for creating: MAM.

Just like BYOD is getting tossed around a little too liberally, it seems like MAM (e.g. Mobile Application Management) has become an app dev catch all. Everyone is eager to claim it does just about anything under the sun, when it should really have a very well-defined set of attributes.

In the past two weeks we’ve had a lot of calls with industry analysts, all working hard to figure out how to cover MAM. They’re eager to give it their stamp, their definition, and thus take command of what MAM means in the enterprise mobile app marketplace. As a concept close to our hearts, we’re happy to see MAM awareness on the upswing, but we want to make sure perception ultimately matches reality.

We’ve heard that MAM means security. We’ve heard that MAM means analytics. We’ve heard that MAM means deployment.

Well, each of these assessments is partially right. Those are aspects of MAM — but they account for only one facet of the complete mobile app management lifecycle. And that’s precisely what MAM is defined by — the entire lifecycle.

MAM is so much more than just distribution; distro is the easy part (that’s why we have a free app store). Starting with the development, following through with the analytics, circling back for enhancements — being able to see this complete picture is the real context that constitutes MAM.

As for how to get the most out of MAM, that’s been our mission from day one. The very reason we launched App47 is because we saw the need for true MAM as implemented from a single platform, not a Frankenstein approach where you had to stitch together the services from five or six different vendors. Remember that we’re dealing with mobile devices. We don’t have endless RAM, and users are constantly fighting for space on their phones and tablets. Every time we saw an un-necessary API added, we cringed.

A single aspect of mobile app management is not MAM. A half-dozen different vendors cobbled together to address different performance areas is not MAM. One vendor that can manage the entire mobile app lifecycle — that’s MAM. And that’s all we have to say about that.

Wondering if you’re at risk in terms of data privacy issues? Don’t worry . . . you are.

When it comes to mobile security and data privacy, the answer is — in no uncertain terms — yes.

There’s a lot of conflicting perspective on data privacy priorities in the enterprise mobile app sector right now. Some are in a panic. Others are in denial. As with most issues, sanity lies somewhere in between — but achieving it requires a bit of education.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can rationalize data privacy issues away. You can’t.

You need a mobile app strategy. You need a privacy policy. And you need to stick to them.

Check out our one-hour webinar tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST to learn how to get started.

App47 CEO Shares Mobile App Expertise in Today’s InfoWorld

“The enterprise was not focused at all around mobile apps or enterprise app stores” in 2011, but “in 2012, we’re seeing the complete opposite.”

So says App47 CEO Chris Schroeder in an informative InfoWorld article authored by Paul Krill on the emergence of the corporate app store, and ways enterprise IT now seeks to distribute its own apps.

Today, We’re Pleased to Announce the End of $3 Apps that Cost $12

Allow us to explain:

We’ve just released an improved iteration of our mobile application lifecycle management platform (you can read the press release here for more details). The new release includes some snazzy UX refinements based on user feedback, but the most important change is an unprecedented ability to control application management and distribution in single transactions. The inefficient, time-consuming days of meticulously delivering single copies of an app to dozens or hundreds of people in an organization are over.

If you’re familiar with buying a few dozen or a hundred copies of an app via Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program (VPP), you know how tedious it is to sift through a spreadsheet and one-off email each redemption code to each employee. Figure the time wasted managing organizational distribution, and you might be paying, say, $12 for a three-dollar app.

That kind of inefficiency just doesn’t cut it; the new version of our enterprise mobile app management platform makes that a thing of the past. If you’re building apps or deploying apps for the enterprise check out the latest version of App47, it’s free so give it a shot!

App Dev Pros, It’s Time for a Critical Conversation

On April 18th, we’re hosting a timely mobile app privacy policy conversation with Morgan Reed, Executive Director for the Association for Competitive Technology (ACT), which represents more than 3000 small and mid-size app developers and information technology firms. Morgan has helped mobile business owners develop privacy strategies, and he’s been in the trenches, helping quell the push of Congress to slow mobile innovation and restrict access.

This webinar will seek answers to increasingly important questions such as:

  • What’s the current state of mobile privacy?
  • Why all the attention from Congress on mobility?
  • What implication does data privacy have on a businesses mobile strategy?

Whether you’re an app dev firm responding to customers’ inquiry or you’ve rolled out a mobile app and are being grilled by a Senate sub-committee trying to determine whether your app is violating consumer privacy rights, you need to be ready with the right response.

The Impending App Management Boom: When We’re Right, We’re Right

With the end of Q1, we were looking forward to a decent amount of traction with respect to our Mobile Application Management solution. When App47 got started, we considered ourselves the proverbial MAM David facing an overwhelming MDM Goliath (Not that we think it’s a zero-sum situation. There are plenty of integrated MAM/MDM approaches that can constitute a smart mobile strategy).

What we’ve seen over the past four months, however, is a rapidly emerging understanding of the need to manage not only devices, but the apps themselves. The enterprise has been aware of managing mobility around devices for some time; now, the enterprise is waking up to managing mobility around mobile apps.

The conversations we’re having, the enhancements we’ve made to our soon-to-be-released platform upgrade, the genuine need we’re seeing from organizations large and small, public and private — it’s generated major MAM momentum.

What’s around the corner in Q2? Apps are clearly coming out of their infancy. There’s increasing emphasis on good UI/UX, spirited discussion about BYOD, and plenty of prognostication about the future of apps.

For us, one thing has become obvious: MAM has moved from interesting idea to imperative strategy. We’re looking forward to the rest of the year.
