Identifying the Biggest Threats to Mobile Security

With more mobile devices being unveiled and used every day, it’s no wonder that mobile security is quickly becoming more top-of-mind for employers, consumers, and employees alike.

Today’s mobile security landscape is more complicated than ever. So, where are the threats coming from? What do they look like? And what are today’s organizations doing to counter them?

In a recent infographic, IBM examined these security threats to try to give a snapshot of what’s at play in attempts to secure the mobile enterprise. Here are some of the more interesting statistics they gathered:

  • By 2016, there will be over 2 billion smartphone users, with over 268 billion mobile downloads by 2017
  • There are 387 new threats every minute or more than six every second. 97% of the top paid Android apps and 87% of the top paid iOS apps have been hacked
  • 97% of organizations say some portion of their workforce uses mobile devices in their job today
  • 32% of organizations say lost/stolen devices are the leading cause of mobile security incidents, and 50% of organizations say content theft and leakage are their top concerns
  • 60% of employees access content from outside the office
  • On average, companies test less than 50% of the mobile apps they build
  • 76% of organizations plan to invest more in mobile technologies in 2016-2017
  • The annual U.S. cost of a cyber-crime is $11.56 million per organization

Talk about some remarkable statistics.

While it would be easy to look at the data cited here by IBM and resign to never implement an enterprise mobility initiative, the fact of the matter is that mobility is here to stay. What’s more, the organizations that are most attuned to today’s mobile threats are also going to be those best positioned to fight them on an ongoing basis.

As these stats show, mobile security is going to grow more important year over year. Do you have the right tools in place to ensure you stay ahead of the curve?
